Hip-Hop standout Missy Elliot recently announced that she is suffering from ‘Graves Disease’. She has said the disease causes nerve damage, and at times her symptoms were so bad, that she was not even able to hold a pen to write her songs. Currently the illness is in remission, and she is looking forward to resuming her career. Missy who grew up Virgina, has said she started singing and writing songs when she was a child. Professionally she prefers to write songs in a recording studio, listening to the tracks, by artists she collaborates with.
Missy has said, that depending on what mood the track she is listening to, usually determines how the song will come out. Missy who turned 40 on July 1st, has said she clearly stays away from writing “gangsta” type of rhyming. The reason for that, is that, she feels there are too many negative connotations associated with those types of lyrics. She has said she tends to write songs, about feelings, and going through human experiences, rather then what clothes she’s wearing. Missy also said that when she first wrote songs professionally, they were written in an old 2 story house in upstate New York.

Looking up to Missy Elliot is something that keeps me driven. She is one of the best artists to venture into the hip hop industry. Hip Hop has frequently discredited females and disrespected them as well. Missy Elliot, however, must have ignored those truths. She persevered and excelled with her first single. Under the guidance of Timbaland and on the same team as the late Aaliyah, she was almost destined to win. When her album came out, people were more than happy to buy two. I know my friends and I were. We waited for the albums release date and headed to our local WalMart to purchase. Her strong personality made her unique style ideal for my friends and I. Even though Missy sold millions of records, she never once dressed revealingly or disrespected other females. She simply used words that exemplified her attributes and creative abilities. Collaborations with Missy Elliot were an immediate success. This influenced many producers and artists to tap into many of Missy’s other valuable sources. They used Timbaland’s beats and Missy’s lyrics or vice versa. Either way, the strong personality and unmatched style of Missy Elliot set her apart from all other Hip Hop artists and has millions of fans waiting to see what will be next.
